LSM 1301 - General Biology

This is definitely one of the modules in NUS for people who have no 'A' level background....one lecture per week, only 5 lab sessions, one museum visit which took me less than 15 mins to find the assignment answer and the best part....MCQ final year exams!

The lab sessions are the most interesting bit of this module. Got to see fluorescent fishes, see wild mushrooms, cultivate yeast, make wine using bacteria fermentation, see live moving bacteria cells, and the best part was actually to conduct gel electrophoresis which even the A levels bio students didn't get to do!

Using the concept of relative charges and sizes, the particles will migrate to various electrodes when current flows through it. You get to prepare the agar, set up the apparatus and use a micro-pipette to suck up the sample and place it inside the 'wells'. We were given an unknown sample and various dyes and told to identify the unknown. just see the migration and colour pattern and you will known the answer...fun right...

Of course, dun take this module if you detest biology or sciences as there are many terminologies to remember. Advantage if you are a science student though. Topics covered range from DNA to ecology to evolution. Almost all aspects of biology....
