Army Open House 2007
This was one of the best army open house I have ever been to. I had the chance of firing a SAR 21 using live rounds, hitch a ride on the BV, tried out the standard obstacle course, see my army seniors, see urban warriors in action etc...
In order to get the tickets that are on first come first come basis for the military rides, me and my gf stomped the army open house as early as 10.30am. Luckily, we managed to get the tickets although it was like around 5 or 6pm but it was worthwhile. For those who have not experienced army life, the ride will be an exhilarating one for you. I saw my csm and a few familiar faces at the booth which consists of the armour family.
After getting the tickets, we went round to see the static display den went to the cyberlab to play a round of 'counter-strike'. We also got a taste of the cookhouse food at a discounted price of $3.50. In army, every lunch meal costs around $7 is I am not wrong. Lunch was a simple fare, consisting of fired rice with fried chicken drumstick and 2 pieces of fish cake. Though simple, it tastes good but we didn't get to taste such 'good' food during army days.
Right after lunch, we went to the parade square to catch the urban ops show. Before the show, we were entertained by a talented group of people from the SAF music and drama company. There was also a performance by the cheer leading team from NTU. Must have went through failures and tough training to be able to throw and balance the gals. The band from Swiss Cottage came in after that before the main performance started.
This is how the plot goes: Everything was beautiful and peaceful like a normal day when people in the community come out to play and engage in their own activities. Then came a gang of bad guys who held the innocent people captive as hostage, disrupting their daily activities. The Urban warriors were called in to rescue the people and restore peace. The primus and Apache helicopter provide stong artillery support from far while the Superpuma came in from the distant with troops who assailed down to the ground. After that, the guards came in with the light strike vehicle, the armour came in with the Ultra M113 to provide fire support while the urban warriors prepare to take down the villains. Slowly, the warriors enter the building where the people were held hostage, with the aid of various devices and the UAV, they captured and killed all the villains and gained victory. What an interesting show....Felicia Chin arrived shortly after that and peoplee swamped to where she was and surrounded her with camera flashes.
SOC was the next place we went to where i tried out all the obstacles easily without any weight before we went live firing @ the safti 100m range. 5 rounds were given and to earn a marksmen badge, just hit the target 5 times. It was easy; even children got it.
Rain came after that and we went for a heritage tour before getting on the BV military ride. We were allowed to stand and stick our heads out of the hatches for the ride in a small part of Area A. Nothing fascinating except for the smoke and light generated from the tripflare.
The intriguing one was the tonner ride in the night where we witnessed how the massive Howitzer cleared the mine field as it had rotating sharp blades to trigger off any mines in the ground. The Primus came in to fire blanks to simulate the firing of the enemy location from far. Also witness the Bionix 40/50 and Tank live firing! It was so deafening that the whole 5 tonner shoke when the tank fires. The military intelligence people also came up to the tonner and show us that the enemy is coming in using a device he wore on his left hand....
This was the best part...feeling tired and satisfied, we went home with lots of memories, actions and of course...souvenirs.....haha
